Painting our furry friends is always a challenge to me due to the subtle light patterns in the soft fur coats. I use a merging and mingling technique and then over the dried first washes, i do some stronger color strokes to get complexity and variety in the colors and the brush strokes.

"Yahoo" is my favorite wolf image with lots of variety in the fur, accented with cadmium orange; so essentially i did a softer merging wash of multiple colors as first wash, then when dry i did a heavier wash with more hard edges and brush strokes.

 

In "Griz", i used an intentional movement of brush strokes, somewhat circular to achieve the complexity in the fur, again with Cadmium Orange, which my daughter thinks is my fav color, really? ha.

 

 

and in "Bear Beware", i used some strong dark shadows to emphasize movement upo to the head; and in "Griz" i focused on the shadow shapes around the eyes.
